CIM Users Group

The CIM Users Group (CIMUG) was formed in 2005, as a subgroup of the UCA International Users Group, to provide a forum in which users, consultants, and suppliers could cooperate and leverage the IEC CIM international standards to advance interoperability across the utility enterprise. The primary purpose is to share technology basics, best practices and technical resources while Advancing Interoperability for the Utility Enterprise.

What is CIM?

The Common Information Model (CIM) is a standardized data model that enables consistent, structured exchange of information across electric utility systems. By providing a common framework for representing power system resources, CIM supports integration, interoperability, and data transparency across diverse platforms and applications—from planning and operations to market systems and enterprise tools.

UCAIug plays a leading role in promoting the adoption and evolution of CIM through collaboration with utilities, vendors, and standards organizations. Through its CIM Users Group, UCAIug supports the development of best practices, testing procedures, and implementation guidelines that ensure practical, real-world use of CIM in modern utility environments. By fostering a global community of stakeholders, UCAIug helps drive innovation, alignment, and consistency in utility data management and system integration.

Various activities meet with various cadences:

  • Weekly (virtual): Task Forces, Working Groups and Subcommittees on development, use-case data modeling, NMM and more
  • Biweekly (virtual):  Subcommittees on use-case data modeling or testing & certification
  • Monthly (virtual):  General CIM Users group update
  • Ad-hoc (virtual):  Marketing subcommittee for DistribuTECH & Plugfest planning
  • Annually (in-person): OpenFMB interoperability Plugfest event

The CIM Users Group is comprised of a diverse mix of energy industry stakeholders including electric utilities, hardware and software vendors, research labs, federal government, and consultants.  These dedicated individuals contribute as they are able and participate in activities based on interest and ability.
