Purpose of this Focus Community
The purpose of this community is to define and standardize how physical attributes of power system devices are represented within the IEC 61970 Common Information Model (CIM). This includes detailed modeling of transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, conductors, and other essential grid components—capturing characteristics such as ratings, impedances, physical dimensions, manufacturer data, and configuration options. By aligning these representations across planning, operations, and asset management systems, the Physical Device Characteristics Focus Community helps ensure consistent data exchange, improved system modeling accuracy, and streamlined integration of digital twins. This group works closely with equipment manufacturers, utilities, and software providers to continuously refine and extend CIM’s ability to represent real-world grid infrastructure.
Various activities meet with various cadences:
- Biweekly (virtual): Subcommittees on use-case data modeling or testing & certification
- Monthly (virtual): General Focus Community update
- Ad-hoc (virtual): Marketing subcommittee for any upcoming User Group meetings or events
- Annually (in-person): Meet-up at one or more UCA User Group meetings
The Physical Device Characteristics Focus Community is comprised of a diverse mix of energy industry stakeholders including electric utilities, hardware and software vendors, research labs, federal government, and consultants. These dedicated individuals contribute as they are able and participate in activities based on interest and ability.
