Purpose of this Focus Community

The purpose of this community is to collaboratively develop and refine key parts of the IEC 61970 series of standards, which form the backbone of the Common Information Model (CIM) for energy management system (EMS) integration. These dedicated part teams are responsible for defining, updating, and harmonizing specific sections of the 61970 standards—covering topics such as network modeling, topology, state estimation, and system dynamics. Through regular collaboration, this community ensures the CIM framework remains aligned with evolving industry needs, enabling interoperability, modular architecture, and efficient exchange of system data across diverse platforms and vendors. Whether you’re a modeler, implementer, or standards expert, your insights are vital to shaping the next generation of EMS integration standards.

Various activities meet with various cadences:

  • Biweekly (virtual):  Subcommittees on use-case data modeling or testing & certification
  • Monthly (virtual):  General Focus Community update
  • Ad-hoc (virtual):  Marketing subcommittee for any upcoming User Group meetings or events
  • Annually (in-person): Meet-up at one or more UCA User Group meetings

The WG14 Part Teams Focus Community is comprised of a diverse mix of energy industry stakeholders including electric utilities, hardware and software vendors, research labs, federal government, and consultants.  These dedicated individuals contribute as they are able and participate in activities based on interest and ability.
